What is the best way to spend your time? Playing games, watching TV, or reading a book? The answer may surprise you. But, if you have been searching for something new and exciting to do with your free time, why not try playing one of the world’s oldest games: Mahjong! It’s an ancient Chinese game that has become wildly popular in recent years due to its fast-paced gameplay and challenging puzzles. In this article, we will go over how to play Mahjong.

There are many Mahjong games, but we will focus on the most widely played variations: Shanghai and Hong Kong:

  • In a game of Shanghai, players have seven tiles, each with one free space in the middle. The rest of their tiles are placed face down at random next to them. Then, each player draws five more tiles from the wall and places them in front of themselves, ensuring they do not overlap any other open spaces on that side of the table (except for double four).
  • Players then discard one tile from their hand at a time until there is only one left or all discarded pieces form an unblocked sequence off to either side. When this happens, players can place it anywhere within those sequences as long as it does not block off any open spaces.
  • Once the discarded pieces form unblocked sequences off to either side, players can place a tile anywhere within them as long as it does not block any other open spaces on that side of the table (except for double four).
  • When there is only one player left or all tiles have been drawn from the wall and discarded, this round ends with each player getting points based on which type of game they are playing.
